How to Communicate with Law Enforcement Officers

“What to Do If Law Enforcement Officers Want to Talk to You Against Your Will” is a one-page infographic memo by Borysenko & Partners law firm, 2026 edition, published in Ukrainian. The previous version of this infographic became an internet hit, and the new edition has been updated in line with the current Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

You have the legal right to refuse such a conversation, and doing so can protect you from more serious problems. The memo explains how.

Seven rules from the memo

1. Do not let officers into your home without a court decision.
2. Write down the officer’s details and contact phone number.
3. Contact your attorney.
4. Keep silent until your attorney arrives.
5. Do not sign anything without an attorney.
6. Do not go anywhere with the officers.
7. If you have one, show your Borysenko & Partners client card.

The recommendations are based on Article 63 of the Constitution of Ukraine, Article 18(3) of the Law of Ukraine “On the National Police” and Articles 135(9) and 233(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
